Everybody Has Shoes On Sale
Thursday, August 27, 2009

Everywhere I look there seems to be a sale on shoes right now.  I don’t know when the manufacturers bring out their new lines but I am guessing it must be soon because the shoe sales are all over the place.  Here are some of the better sales I have come across:

Crocs.com has a buy one get one free sale going on and you can get an extra 25% off and free shipping on your order using code “slx8798″

PlanetShoes.com has up to 70% off its clearance items and you can get an extra 30% off using code “OCS30″ off any item in their clean sweep sale (indicated with a little broom icon”).  Shipping is free for orders over $49.

Joe’s New Balance Outlet cuts up to 80% off men’s and women’s shoes and you can snag free shipping when you use the code “JNBOFREESHIP”

SimpleShoes.com is cutting 55-80% off all sale items and have free shipping with all orders.

BargainOutfitters.com has up to 78% off for its End of Summer Liquidation sale.  This includes shoes plus many other items.

With this many deals floating around it might be time to buy an extra pair for when your current shoes wear out.

Fixing Plastic Items
Wednesday, August 26, 2009

It is a common misconception that it is hard if not impossible to fix an item that is made out of plastic if it breaks.  This makes sense at first glance.  Metal can be welded and wood can be glued or nailed back together, but plastic, especially the thinner variety, is just done.

To do a plastic weld you will need a tool, the glue gun.  The first step is to seal the crack with the glue gun.  Let this cool so that you have a thin seal over whatever pieces were broken.  Next, we will need to reinforce this repair with another piece of plastic.  This can come from a variety of places.  If you need a larger piece of plastic consider the lid of a juice bottle or cutting it out of the flat side of a milk jug.  If you are repairing a small crack or tear then the flat plastic tabs that you get off of bread products is a great tool.  Whatever piece of plastic you choose cut it to the size you need it and adhere that around the crack with more hot glue.  Magically your plastic item is functional again and you are only out a few cents for the hot glue.  I have seen this used on laundry baskets, dish drainers and a variety of other plastic products.  I hope it helps you save a trip to the store to buy something new.

Watch Your Teen and Keep Insurance Low
Tuesday, April 29, 2008

I came across a website called Drive Cam.  It is simply a way to watch for risky driving behavior. Their main focus is companies with fleets of drivers, but I see this as a real way to reduce your insurance if you have a teenager in your home.  My niece, DOBS (which stands for daughter of black sheep), is now sixteen and starting to learn how to drive.  Frankly she is scary.  Black Sheep is the only one who is willing to ride in the vehicle with her and he is a battle tested veteran of the U.S. Army.  Almost nothing phases him.

With this program you get a camera inside the vehicle plus they make recommendations for how to improve the driving habits of the driver.   This seems that it would comfort an insurance company and give you a chance to ask for a lower rate when insuring a young driver.  If they do not comply at first maybe after a year with documented evidence of good driving you could get them to budge a little.  Plus you get to know where your teen is going.  This probably will not go over well with the newly independant but their safety and your insurance rates are what is at stake.

The Best Laid Plans
Saturday, November 24, 2007

Well I had a reasonably successful Black Friday and yet completely frustrating.  Although I had planned to go to five stores ,I only made it to two because neither one was ready for the onslaught of customers.  I was in Warner Robins, Ga visiting family for Thanksgiving so I went out on Friday morning at 4AM with my brother-in-law.  We went to Circuit City first and he scored a 46 and 32 inch television.  This took so long I had to abandon him there and head to Staples.  At staples I got a GPS,  some PC memory, and a cool pad for my wife’s laptop.  By the time I got out of Staples, which opened at 6AM and picked up my brother-in-law at CC it was 8:30 so we went home and played with our new toys and forgot about the smaller items on my hit list.  Did anyone take a shot at Black Friday and come out ahead?
