My one year old beagle is scared of everything...can anyone help?
Monday, September 22, 2008

I just recently adopted a beautiful copper beagle who is about a year old. When we saw her at the shelter she was skiddish but I knew she needed a good home so I adopted her. We got her home and found that she was terrified of everyone and everything. I've had her for almost 3 weeks now and she's getting better around me. She wags her tail and will come up to me as long as no one else is around. As for my 5 yr old son and almost 3 yr old daughter she is terrified of them. More my son than daughter. She runs and hides when my son comes around me when I'm around her. She will let my daughter near her only if I am there. She has never growled or snapped at either of them. The shelter woman said she is a gentle dog around her kids but she hasn't been around mine as much. My question is what do I do to help her to be comfortable around my kids? I love her already and I don't want to have to find her a new home. She is a sweetheart with me...she doesn't play though and hates leashes. I have slowly gotten her used to walking around the yard on one but we haven't left familiar surroundings yet. What if anything is there that I can do for her? I know it will take time too. Is there any other suggestions? Thank you for reading this and for your comments.
