Benefit Performance
Wednesday, September 27, 2006

Last night I got free tickets for a benefit performance for a charity here in the Detroit area.  The performance was for Judith Gold who has a show on HBO.  I've seen her before on Comedy Central and others.

It was nice going to a fancy music theater and having petits fore and coffee afterwards.

I got the tickets for free.  I got to sit in box seats.  Very nice and plush.

Weekend Words
Monday, September 25, 2006

Last week was a bad week, I was fighting with my best friend, got kicked out a group I belong too, had my insurance cancelled, no money, no man, no life, no gas - lol.

But today on Monday things are looking up.  Made up with my best friend.  We went to Tubby's Submarine (Delicious Detroit Style Subs) and then went and saw Clerks II.  Which shocked me with its raunchiness, but since I am partial to that sort of whimsy, had me cracking up all through it.

My insurance is good today, got the problem solved.  Got money for gas.  And who really needs a man?  (Well I can't fix my vaccum cleaner belt so I need one for that).

Library DVD's
Friday, September 22, 2006

In order to save money and entertain myself I have been getting dvd's from the public libraries around here.  In Michigan we can use any library in the state.  Many of the libraries have great collections of dvd's, videos, and audio books.

Tonight I'll be cuddling up on my couch and watching a few old movies...Little Big Man with Dustin Hoffman and Hitch.

It is a great way to save money and have some entertainment.

I've also been using libraries to meet people.  I'd rather meet a man who reads for fun instead of drinks (I know, I know....good luck with that).

Tin Can Jack-O-Latern Baskets
Friday, September 22, 2006

Last night I painted cleaned out cans and primed them in white and then painted them orange.  I then took some extra glow in the dark stars and cut them into triangles.  Then I took the triangles and glued them on the cans.

I added wire to the top (though holes I punched with a nail in the top of the can).

I now have a collection of cute little Jack-O-Latern baskets.  It was easy and turned out very cute!!!

As soon as I can buy some batteries on sale for my digital camera I'll post a picture of my cute little craft

Getting Over the Bobo
Wednesday, September 20, 2006

My boyfriend moved away to Florida and decided he wanted me to come there and live with him.  He led me on telling me we would get married after a year.

Well, a month before I am supposed to go there (and on our anniversary) he wrote me an email and broke up with me.  I had just spoken to him 15 minutes before I got to work and when I got to work there was the awful email.

I'm just not over him yet.  When will I quit thinking about him?  Why is it so hard?

Homemade Enchilada Sauce
Monday, September 18, 2006

I've been on a Tex-Mex kick lately, but am too frugal to pay $1.89 for a 8 ounce can of enchilada sauce.  So I figured out how to make it.  I made 8 delicious cups of enchilada sauce for about a dollar if I really took the time to figure it out.  That sure beats the price I have to pay.

It was simple and pretty mild, which is how I like it.

I doubled the recipe so I could freeze some.

2 tbls oil

2 tbls flour

2 tbls chili powder

1 can of tomato sauce

2 cups of water

Pinch of salt and Big Pinch of Garlic Powder

Heat the oil in a sauce pan, add the flour and chile powder and stir it until it makes kind of a paste (roux).  Add in remaining ingredients and bring to a boil.

Reduce heat to a simmer and simmer for at least 15 minutes.

I had enough to make chicken and bean enchiladas and had enough left over to fill up some freezer container as well as add some to cooked chicken and rice so I thaw that out in a hurry and start a dinner in a flash.

CPR & First Aid Class
Monday, September 18, 2006

Saturday I spent all day relearning CPR and First Aid.   The class was informative, but took so long.  I was there from 9 to 5.  Heck, I don't even sit that long at work!

CPR has changed since I took it even last year.  Now it is 30 compressions to 2 rescue breaths.  I sure hope I never have to use it!  It takes to long!  Actually I think I'd be the one who should call EMS and then wait as a lookout for the ambulance.

I've taken it before and never had to use it.  I hope I never need to.

Making the other kind of coffee filter
Thursday, September 14, 2006

I had a great frugal idea this morning which actually works.

I needed to have some of the other size coffee filters for work, but I only had the basket type.  I just cut to the middle of the filter and then rolled into the "v" shape and put it in the coffee filter basket.  It worked!!! There was no overflow of coffee grinds into the coffee.

The other type of coffee filter is 100 for $3.47, I can get 100 of the basket t ype filters of 100 for $.99.

Trying to Eat Well on $4.00 a day
Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Well I know that Rachel Ray has $40 a day to spend on restaurant food, but myself I am going to try to have great breakfasts, lunches and dinners for about $4.00 a day.

This morning I had a wonderful bowl of rice and greenbeans for around $.45 cents.  Only $.35 for the green beans at Aldi's and about ten cents worth of rice.

This afternoon I am planning on a lunch of guacamole (avocados I bought at the open air market, Eastern Market last week for $.50 a piece.  I am going to make this wonderful lunch at my desk today.  I have part of an onion and the avocado.  I am going to the little store down the street to get chips for $.99 (this way I only eat one little bag and not a huge bag at one setting).  I also have a huge cucumber to eat that I paid $.25 cents for so, my lunch will be a grand total of $1.74

I have $1.81 left for dinner which will consist of a meatloaf sausage on a bun and some noodles and maybe a can of corn.

Garbage Bags
Tuesday, September 12, 2006

I hate spending money for garbage bags!!!! I know they are just going to waste.  I save the all the bags from different stores and use them right in my wastebaskets.  Much cheaper than small kitchen bags.  I can't wait until Christmas time so I can start saving and using the large Walmart bags.

Lately I have been using a plastic bag in small wastebasket lined with a grocery store bag and then when that is full I fill my bigger garbage can with that, then I throw them all away at once on garbage days.  It saves me a little money every month.

Christmas Gift Tags
Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Last night I was so bored I started making my own Christmas gift tags.  I rubber stamped a snowman family on old Christmas cards from last year and cut out with fancy paper scissors.  I spent about an hour coloring them.

I have already started on my frugal Christmas shopping.  I've been picking up stuff off the summer clearance racks.  It's a good thing my mother has a yen for orange picnic plates for her January birthday each year.
