Out Shopping

Had an audition in Burbank - which is close, but we never seem to get there....so as it was Saturday, hubby & I decided to make a day of it. I waited to read & hubby went across the street to a sports bar that had every game under the sun on its various monitors! (He had coffee.)
Once I finished, we walked up to the street leading to the Burbank Center mall - and lo and behold there was a $1 bookstore there! Both hubby & I bought books - some for Xmas presents, some just for us. I managed to sneak 2 books for hubby to the cash register without him seeing! I will add those to the 2 adventure books I bought discounted at Barnes & Noble. Hubby is hard to shop for...
A few doors down there was WASTELAND, a high end vintage store (I have sold things to them) - Whew everything is PRISTINE & VERY EXPENSIVE. I saw boots like the ones I bought years ago in an Army/Navy store in England for hundreds of dollars! I liked a lot of the pieces - but I am very low end - the reason I love shopping for vintage up in Ventura - there it's straight from the owner to the thriftshop - without the markup!
New, the boots I already possess would cost hundreds of dollars, too! I just buy them & when they are in fashion, bring them out. The Army/Navy boots are from the 70's!
It's always instructive for me to walk through a store like Macy's & show hubby the price tags. He is confounded that handbags can cost $300! Then I remind him why I snap up similar styles an designers at thriftshops whenever I come across them. The Michael Kors tote I bought recently would be $200+ new & I bought it for $7??
We walked over to IKEA, as Mark likes to make a trip around Xmas time. Again, I was astounded at the prices of the laminate furniture. I remarked to hubby that the Scandinavian birch veneer computer desk would be hundreds of dollars here in IKEA, and we spent $30 on it at the Salvation Army! Then there was the birch?? veneer little side table I picked up off the street over in the Valley. Hubby fixed it up for me & now it's a printer table. (I hated the one we had. It was veneer - but that hideous cheap dark stuff...) That table would be at least 50-90 bucks at IKEA. And who would know the difference?
I do like Ikea for small things, and we bought a little black lantern to replace the one that broke in the boat - and a paper lantern to put over the fixture in the bedroom - somehow. And then they had a special on frozen meatballs + potatoes + cream sauce, which we treated ourselves with - plus a jar of lingon berries & some plaid napkins to give to my brother....
You have to buy bags there at Ikea - but their blue plastic bags with handles are a steal at $.59 each - so we didn't mind.
All in all, we spent the afternoon wandering around - windowshopping & really not spending much $. There were a lot of people around, though & I don't think I am going to go to a mall now until after Xmas, unless I absolutely HAVE to - as I hate crowds.
Gotta say that I was disappointed that NO ONE responded for the CARMEX giveaway - but I have the items right here to send out, so here's your second chance - I will wait a few weeks & then just give them to somebody....Just email me at pamphyila@yahoo.com with your name & address. Does NO ONE actually read this blog? That's disappointing.
Have a great Thanksgiving. We are dining with a bunch of our friends....
