gus the deaf am staff

Thursday, July 16, 2009

i have  a 120 lb,  year old bull dog who is completely deaf. i did not know this when i purchased him. he is solid white with a few black spots. i found out later that solid white dogs of his breed are missing a cromezone and mostly are deaf or have blue eyes. his ear canal is completely closed. i found out on my own that he could not hear a thing. if we walked in the room and he was sleeping he would not know we were there. well anyway my gus knows sigh language. our own signs hat we have made up for him. he is the most affectionate thing in the world, being pit bulls are so ferocious. he is one of 5 that we have. the funny thing is,, when he is out in the yard i have to wave my arms back and forth to grab his attention. then i do our sigh for treat and he comes running. ( the trick is to always have treats on hand!) well i thought this was between me and him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WRONG!!! now all of my other dogs have gotten wise to this hand signal ( i put my fingers to my mouth) and they also want a treat. my point being, it takes patients, knowledge, and repetition, but it all pays off in the end. most would put an animal like this down. what a shame to end such a wonderful life. take time to really know your animal. they are truely your bent friend!!!
