Blog: Disorderly Order

Random musings, ideas, and things I run across throughout my goal of opening my eyes to what is already around me and a way to do things that isn't foolishly consumer oriented. Sometimes the old ways truly were the best.

When you need it, there it is!

I'm still new to being frugal. Really. I just moved however to a place that for time and space, not to mention older appliances, DEMANDS I figure it out.

Tiny fridge means less food I can store that is fresh. Luckily it's balanced by a ton of open shelf storage. I think in the 30's people kept more dry goods and root items aroud. I'm not sure. I have merely the bones of my home to go on.

Anyways everyone in my family teases me that I'm a book snake. Not a worm, a snake. I'm too large to be a worm. I burrow in to an entire library and begin my ravenous consumming of everything from comic books, art, religion, history, and the latest trashy romance novels. Usually with a few forays to the side in between. Books are rarely turned down and I walk away from moving sales and book stores with a confusing variety.

I was just thinking how happy I was to have recently been given a lot of free books on varying topics when I went to a meeting last night. (I'm one of the small percentage of people with an eating disorder and attend O.A. It keeps me sane.)

What do I find out with a free sign near the church? Random goodies to be gone through. I had to keep reminding myself I don't NEED to salvage everything. Just look for what I need and then someone else can take what they need. In the end I left with a huge smile, a pair of books one on origins of children's fables and the other on herbs for salads.

It was the other thing however that delighted me. A beautiful small iron box in the shape of an old chest that had rusted over. Perhaps I was crazy but the rust added to the charm, the hinged way i opened like a treasure trove gave me instant inspiration. I want to use it as a planter box. It will go outdoors with the rest of my plants I am trying to start from seedlings...but oh how happy I am to have found it. Funny thing is now as I drive around (I live on a windy road frequented by garage sales I generally am too 'busy' to go to) I look not for the sales but for the abandoned.

Sometimes what you need or truly want just shows up. Now if Only I could find a good new dishpan....not mind you, that I lament the loss of a washer. Just that I have a terrible sink.
