Blog: Life is a Garden

I'm a newbie here but I've always tried to be thrifty. With raising 4 kids, helping to raise my granddaughter, being a foster parent and day care provider I often had to really pinch pennies to provide for the kids and entertain them. Needless to say, it was interesting.

I came up with this idea to take fabric from clothing,t ablecloths, sheets , etc. and see what I can do to create a new life for it.  the blinds in my bathroom were worn out, so I took an old blue, too small tablecloth and made curtains for the window. They actually look nice! The room is painted medium blue [leftover paint] and has white trim and some other neutral colors. I bought a really cool beachy shower curtain and decorated with seashells and photos I took of lighthouses. You can't see the new curtain or my decorative touches but I will try to get more pics and add later.

I'm not a good seamstress, just basic knowledge but I am working on a way to create some cool cloth tote/purse bags, like the popular bags girls are using today.

I also need a to make a storage bag for my plastic shopping bags I reuse as trash can liners, etc.

Learning all the while
Friday, July 25, 2008

For many years, I have made an attempt at growing a variety of flowers, bushes and vegetables.  It has been interesting to say the least. I have probably had more failures than success but I have learned a little more every year.

One of the ways I have learned to save on water is to save all the buckets I can to save water and to clean up quickly. I use rain water collected during rainy times to water during the dry spells.  Be sure to cover the water if it needs to sit for awhile until use to prevent the spread of mosquitos.  This saves wear and tear on my well, the electricity needed to run the well and rainwater is the best water.  I am hoping to expand this water saving in the future to a better system.

I also reuse buckets and baskets to keep the pinecones and sticks cleaned up in my yard. I have quite a few messy trees. I keep containers here and there and when there is a mess, I just grab a bucket and pick up the mess and then use it for kindling in my homeade firepit. We enjoy burning the scrap wood in the evenings and it's all free!  Best of all, I reused some old fire bricks my neighbor was not using  and so  am recycling material that otherwise would have ended up in a landfill.

I am very interested in learning ways to recycle and save in the garden.
