curbside collecting
Friday, July 10, 2009
The weather has been really warm here in Michigan which has been a benefit for me. Warm weather brings people out doors to local craft fairs and to their local parks for cook outs. I love this time of the year, its an easy way for me to earn a living. On days when the weather soars into the 80's i go to the local fairs, malls, car washes and parks to collect cans., here in Michigan there is a 10 cent deposit on all cans returned to the store it doesn't sound like much but it adds up quickly when you start putting the cans you find laying around in bags..I went this past friday and i was suprised by the number of people that offered me their cans that they had in their car and just didn't want to fool with returning them to the store..One man even offered to start saving them for me. He was nice and we talked for awhile especially about the economy in Michigan and all over the country. He said with the economy so bad more and more people are looking for ways to earn money. There was all kinds of items in the trash can besides bottles. I found a whole pack of cigarettes and head phones for a walkman radio that had been frayed but are repairable. I make it a habit to know how to fix items that i find..for my use and to sell at other places. I can't get over how people will buy something never use it then throw it away in the trash can. When you throw away and unwanted item that someone else could use you are throwing away money..in these times money is hard to come buy and a foolish to throw away.

survival
what is survival?
being able to live in the current economy
you can live well in the current problems with the economy if your creative with how you spend your money..my situation for instance i live on social security i recieve about a thousand a month..not alot but plenty to survive on..i have a comfortable two bedroom mobile home in a nice area..i stay because the lot rent has remained the same since i first moved in 6 years ago. three years ago i had 2 cars insurance for the cars cost of gas and repairs. i made the decision that the cars had to go if i were to survive on my current budget. i now have 2 bicycles and a 50 cent smart bus pass for my transportation needs..i can ride all over the state on 50 cents and free transfer tickets..this is a savings over $400.00 a month..i have medicare part A i opted out of medicare part B as the premiums were well over a hundred a month.. i ride a bike and walk as my health has improved any dental and vision and health care expenses are added to my income tax form at the end of the year and most cost are refunded to me. so mostly my health care is free.. i have diabetes the cost of my food and clothing and exercising expense and medicine are all deductible at tax time. i shop at yard sales for all my needs any thing can be found at a yard sale for the fraction of the cost..when i go i ride my bike no wasted gas expense..when i need help with the cost of food i go to my local food pantry and churches who are glad to help..i stock up on canned foods which have a shelf life of 5 years..when the economy finally collapses and our government is under siege your money will have no value.what will have value will be your knowledge what you can repair or what you can trade..that is what the world is coming to you can see it everyday when you go to the store to buy food and when you go to the gas station to buy gas..the most valuable idea you can do for yourself today is to learn survival tactics that will help you..the internet is here and a vast tool of information..i am preparing myself for the hard times to come....are you ? will you be able to survive with out electricity, heat, shelter, food...you won't if you are not prepared...

yard sale season
Thursday, May 21, 2009
Hello all it is that time of year again when people are selling their treasures. I love yard sales can't drive by one without stopping. I went yard saling this past weekend with my boyfriend. He loves yard sales and he loves to dicker with people over their price, even if an item is marked a quarter and he feels it can be had for a dime he will dicker. I let him do all price negotiations as i feel a little reserved about asking..We went into some high end neighborhoods this past weekend. I could not believe the items that could be had for a quarter that were still with price tags on them and new in the box. I stopped at this one ladies yard sale and she had alot of lancome cosmetics and cremes. I bought a jar of some lancome creme for a dime new not even used and later i priced it on the internet sells for $ 80.00 dollars a jar. I was suprised to say the least. The best deals we got at the yard sales where in all the free boxes. I got a 45 record cassette radio player with speakers for free, a big bird cage, new car mats, new socks, kitchen hand towels, a travel case, a small container to hold liquids, a picture frame, small light bulbs for the car, bottle of glass cleaner for glasses, books, two end tables, I even bought items new for gift giving. I bought my daughter a really pretty glass jewelry box that had pressed flowers within the glass new still in the box for $ 2.00, I bought a wood unfinished jewelry box with drawers for a quarter, i am going to put a wood burned design on it and give it to a friend for her birthday. I bought a cashmere sweater with the original price tags still on it for a quarter. I have to go to a friends wedding in october and i found a very pretty wedding card for 10 cents..best place to get holiday cards is at yard sales. I get a box of christmas cards for a dime every summer. there were candy disher everywhere with candy in them that were put out for browsing customers which i thought was unusual my boyfriend loved the free candy every where we went he has such a sweet tooth. We even packed our lunch and went to mcdonalds for the free refill on coffee we just keep the mcdonalds cups. they offer free refills there on their beverages but sometimes when you are there you don't always get that free refill so i decided to start saving the cups and when i am in there. I just get my refill. I know it sounds tacky but you pay alot the first time for the beverage you should have a chance for the second cup free.

sscored today at my local thrift
Wednesday, April 15, 2009
I went out with my friend to the local thrift store..We had 50 percent off coupons and wanted to see what we could get for cheap..We entered the store and went out separate ways..I got 2 pair of designer jeans for $4.00 and some low carb cook books and a weight watchers book for a $ 1.00 then i headed over to the display cabinets in the front where they keep the jewelry..It wasn't the jewelry i was looking for sometimes they get make up in and i was looking for that and i found a bag filled with cosmetics for $6.30 it had some high end name brands in there so i thought i would buy it take it home and see what goodies were in there..well my friend stopped at her moms house for a visit and to drop off some groceries and her niece came out to the car to help un load and ended up picking up my bag from the thrift store..she was looking at the bag of cosmetics and offered me $20.00 for it believe me i was tempted..but something said not to sell it so i didn't later my friend dropped me home after our visit with her mom..and i got curious with my make up bag to see what was in it..it was loaded with alot of cosmetics new never opened so i took a pen and wrote down the brand names and went to the web sites on the internet to see if i made the right choice..boy was i surprised my little foray to the thrift store left me with $493.50 worth of makeup..i am thrilled..I can't wait to try everything out..I have to say it was a good shopping trip..there was even a designer fragrance in the mist that sells for $70.00 an ounce..

double coupon day
Saturday, January 17, 2009
Kmart had double coupon to 2.00 dollars the other day i went there with a load of coupons and ended up with freebies..i got a free pack of tums, two boxes of kelloogs cereal for 50 cents a box..a free bottle of motts apple juice two bottles of family size shampoo for 25 cents a piece i also got a free sample of canola oil that the store was passing out i might keep that in my purse and use it on my skin when i dont have lotion with me... .my bill was 66.00 dollars before the coupons and 30.00 dollars after..i guess it was worth the time to clip all those coupons...after i left there i headed to my favorite local thrift store..and found 12 pounds of melt and pour soap..i bought it for a 1.00 a pound...i have never seen melt and pour soap at the thrift store before..i wanted to make some heart shaped soap for valentines day...the best place to by valentines day items is the thrift store..i bought some cards there for a 1.00 for 15 cards..and some gift giving bags for 40 cents a piece..i picked up the molds for the soap at michaels and i got the last one they had..my friend likes what i do with melt and pour soap i add my own oils and sent and herbs and fragrance to it and it comes out nice it sure is better than store bought soap..so i thought i would make her some for valentines day..every time she comes over she cleans me out of the soap i have here..home made soap is better for your skin then regular soap bought at the stores..the store bought stuff is too strong for sensitive skin and besides that you dont know what chemicals you are putting on your skin...i guess i will be working on craft projects tommorrow as we are getting more snow..glad i went to the store the other day so we will be ok with all the snow coming our way..

bingo
Thursday, January 15, 2009
I went over to my friends last night..She had a doctors appointment..in a bad section of town so i volunteered to go with her..in the waiting room i had a nice chat with a woman about the same age as me..we discussed how we make home made lotion for our skin. ..her skin didnt have any wrinkles..my skin doesnt have any wrinkles either..my friend who is a year older than me has alot of wrinkles..she constantly uses that antibacterial soap that you dont have to use with water..i wonder what that does to your skin..well any ways this lady was telling me her recipe on lotion she says she mixes cocoa butter lotion with mineral oil and shea butter..i mixed up a batch similar to what she said..and it went on my hands and made them so soft so much better than using just any old store bought lotion..i also use hand made cold processed soap on my skin and so did this lady but my friend just uses what ever she finds at the store and you can really tell there is a difference..later that day my friend wanted to go to bingo..i said i would go not willingly tho..it costs 20.00 dollars to sit in a smoky room trying to win money..my friend goes every wednesday...so thats 80.00 dollars a month if you think about it by the year thats 960.00 dollars..in my opionon thats alot of money to waste..well her mother won 60.00 dollars that night..i couldnt see why she was so happy thats what it cost all three of us to play...so basically she got her money back..i guess i am an old tightwad i wanted to save my 20.00 dollars for the first season yard sale in the summer..or even at the thrift store where i could have bought a whole bag full of summer clothes for 20.00 dollars..some how the two of them couldnt see my point about bingo..

hard times
Monday, January 12, 2009
the times we live in now are hard times..i think it is a good idea to stock up on non perishable items when i go to yard sales i buy soap last summer i went to a church rummage sale and bought 250 bars of new hotel and motel soap for 50 cents i grate the soap and use it for cleaning and laundry detergent..i buy glycerine soap to at yard sales for cheap and i use this on my skin..glycerine keeps you skin moisturized..i have bought bottles of glycerine at the craft store and walmarts carries it...i add it to lotions to give it more boast..i have bottles of good quality lotions that i buy at yard sales from 10 cents to a quarter and i dump it into a mixing bowl and add one tablespoon of glycerine and two tablespoons of vitamin e night time moisturizing cream sometimes i add a little essential oil fragrance to it whip it up and put it in jars and give it as gifts..all my friends love it and are always asking for more and wanting to know how i make it..i also add some shea butter to it..it makes a great skin lotion for cheap..and last along time because it is richer than regular lotion you only have to use a little bit.. i put it on at night to soak into my skin when i sleep.
vinegar is another good item to have on hand its great for cleaning..i use it in the shower to take the scum off the tub..and to clean the counter tops and mirror..i use apple cider viegar..it is also good to add to water with honey for joint pain..its cheap about 80 cents a gallon and it lasts a long time..i keep it in the refridgerator so it stays fresh..
toothpaste has other uses then for brushing teeth i have used it to clean fine jewelry just scrub it with a tooth brush..it also helps to relieve joint pain..one night i ran out of joint cream andi used tooth paste instead and it made my pain go away on my kness so now i use it when i have sore muscles..i ussually buy the minty gel type tooth paste and if you have a coupon when you buy it you can get it for practically nothing..i ussually get my tooth past at the dentist i ask for a couple boxes and they give them to me i havent told them i have been keeping them in my purse in case my joints start hurting then i always have it on hand..
when i buy canned veggies i save the water that comes in the can and use that to put in with the dogs food to give it flavor dog food is dry and the water makes it have some flavor so the dog doesnt get finicky about his food and will eat it.. i stock up on all can goods when items are on sale you never know when the power is going to go out..

garbage day
Tuesday, December 30, 2008
I can't wait til wednesday our local garbage day, after xmas is the best time to find treasures in the garbage..it seems this is the time people start doing their early spring cleaning..i started spring cleaning yesterday but my items don't make it to the trash heap..i keep them til the summer and have a yard sale..the land lord lets you have two yard sales a year and he pays for the permit..so it doesnt cost any thing to set up and its a great way to earn a little extra money.. actually most of the garbage i pick thru out the year ends up in that garage sale or ends up on ebay..last year i was making $50.00 to $100.00 a week at a local flea market on the weekends selling the goodies from the garbage that i had been picking..i like to refer to it as recycling less in the landfills i suppose..
i guess i am an odd ball i have been this way all my life..cheap i was happy to find this site..have picked up a few good ideas on here for saving money..my boyfriend is like me cheap to and he never went to a yard sale before he met me and he sure never picked trash before but now he brings over all kinds of things he finds by his house in the trash..its great that he has a truck also..recently he brought over a nice wood dresser i put it in my bed room..spring time is nice for finding decent furniture..i will be happy when the cold weather is over and i can get out and go to yard sales and picking..

thrift store shopping
Friday, December 26, 2008
we had an ice storm here in michigan..but that didn't keep us away from out favorite thrift store today..we just waited til the temperature was warmer and the ice melted so we could head out for the sales..i had a 50 percent off coupon for the local thrift store and i was amazed to find out after i arrived at the store that the coupon was for 50 percent off every thing in the store..i was delighted..so was my friend we shared the coupon at the check out she charged the items and i paid her with a check..it was fun..my boyfriend found a comfy chair and sat down he knew two women loose in a thrift store would be a long wait but he didnt mind..indeed it was a rat race in there..i managed to find some outfits for summer and jeans and dress pants and a new skillet for 1.00..my friend found blankets and clothes for her husband mother and son..two hours later when we arrived at the check out with three buggies full of stuff and my boyfriend wanted the comfy computer chair we waited eagerly wondering what the total would be and to our surprise it was just under 60 dollars..even the sales clerk was amazed and a few of the items i had bought still had the original store tags still on them..the stock boy had to help us to my boyfriends truck as the side walk was still a bit slippery from the ice storm..after that we were off to michaels to use our 50 percent off coupons..i bought paint brushes there and my friend used her coupon to buy paint brushes and she gave them to me as part of my xmas present so it was liking buying one and getting one free...even tho the weather wasnt the greatest all in all it was fun..we exchanged gifts at her house.. i made her a woodburned clock for her dining room it cost 2.00 for the wood and 4.00 for the clock kit and she loved it...i buy all my wood at the lumbar yard for woodburning crafts it so much cheaper and you can have the wood cut down to any size you want for free..i wrapped it in recycled gift wrap and but it in one of those xmas bags that i bought last summer at a garage sale 20 bags for a quarter..
