Do you know that dog/cat food is included on the freebie sites? My favorite one is www.freestufftimes.com - It might help to send for samples for emergencies -

It has been fun reading about your scavenging. I love to junk pick, too. The pickin's are pretty slim here in Wisconsin right now. Things don't pick up in that respect until early April when people start to clean closets and garages in preparation for our village-wide garage sale. The only free stuff I've scavenged lately has been wood chips. The city utilities crews have been trimming limbs away from electric lines along the street and the residential feeds.

Yes, it has been a relief to live in the Midwest and not have to worry about anything more serious than ice and snow storms. If it is any consolation, you are about 5,000 miles from those power plants. It's a big ocean. Begonia

Disability

I understand that in order to get disability you have to find/hire an advocate to plead your case. Otherwise they routinely turn down the first application. You can find some on the net who will work for no $ down, & who will collect when you get your lump sum.

Beauty

Lucky for us, good beauty products & makeup are easier & cheaper to come by than ever before! I have never used dept. store brands - but rather what I could get on sale at the drug store, & cheap elsewhere. But I have taken good care of my skin & at 63, it shows!

Few wrinkles & I can pass for at least 10 years younger! I have found Revlon & Almay & other good brands of lipstick/gloss at the dollar store & stocked up! Ditto for eye cream & shampoo! Look for deals at discount places like Ross - & stock up on samples from the freebie sites on the net to stretch your stash.

Cover Girl & Maybelline & L'Oreal & other brands seem to be throwing away masacara! I haven't bought one in a few years, but get them through the makeup cos. (Join all their "club" sites.) Don't forget the old standby petroleum jelly. I put it on my eyelids daily & it has kept them nice & smooth! So, buck up. Yes, it's discouraging to see that rich women are spending thousands of dollars on skin care - but you can do quite a nice job at home & not end up with the overdone "way" look.

Advice

Yes, the shampoo seems to make it drier - I have been using Eucerin Soothing Lotion for the dry scalp, which helps. Went to the dermatologist & he was USELESS. Arg.

Saving Money

It might be a good idea to have a stock pile of food and water and medical supplies in case of some disaster. There may come a time when money will be worthless. You never know nowadays.

scalp

maybe the shampoo you use on your hair is what is irritating it. i dont wash my hair every day it gets too dry also. when my head gets a little itchy i just put lotion on my scalp and that seems to help.

You make me want to install a clothes line
Friday, March 11, 2011 | By HilaryK

I remember my mom drying clothes outside when growing up on the farm in Iowa. Nothing better than sheets dried outside. Jeans, on the other hand, are a different story. Stiff as a board. But even if you finish them up inside, you save beaucoup energy. This is a poetic lil essay, Michelle. You are quite the writer. Keep it up my friend. I'm going to refer my thrifty friends to your blog. Good stuff!
