Free Fruit Gives a Healthy Start

I'm very proud of myself today. It is grocery day. My local supermarket had Del Monte "Fruit Naturals" on sale for $1.00 each. I had a coupon for $1.00 off 2 "Fruit Naturals". Tuesday is Double coupon day for coupons up to $1.00 in value. I purchased 2 containers of fruit for $2.00. At the register, I presented my $1.00 off coupon for 2 containers. My coupon was doubled bringing its value to $2.00. Cost of Fruit=Free.
Deli bagels were on sale six for $1.00. Store brand cream cheese (low fat) was on sale for $0.69 each for an 8 ounce container. The supermarket is apparently discontinuing their store brand of powdered orange drink (generic Tang), with an expiration date of April 2011. I purchased a container that makes 6 quarts (just add water) for $0.47. "Go-gurt" yogurt tubes were marked down to $1.00 per package of 8 with an expiration date of next week. Grand total=$3.16 for breakfast foods.
There are 3 people in my family. Breakfast for two days (3 servings each day X 2 days=six servings) will consist of a bagel with cream cheese, a tube of yogurt, fruit, and one quart of orange drink (100% RDA of Vitamin C). Cost per person =
- Bagel 1/6 package X $1.00=$0.17
- Cream Cheese 1/6 package X $0.69=$0.12
- Go-gurt 1/8 X $1.00=$0.12 (plus two tubes left over for after school snack)
- Orange Drink 1/6 x $0.47=$0.08 (4quarts left over for another time)
- Fruit=free
Total per person=$0.49 each day.
I have provided my family with a healthy breakfast for less than $0.50 per person. Studies indicate that children who start the day with a healthy breakfast do better in school than those who skip breakfast. No fast food restaurant can beat that!!!
