Absolute agree w/you that there R gr8 deals LATE in the day. Sometimes they just want you to tk it AWAY so they don't have to deal w/it. Got a free oak cabinet that way once!

Got Manners!
Monday, June 07, 2010 | By begonia

Good point Bulrush! I actually have had people save stuff just for me since I'm such a regular (I do most of my garage saling within 6 miles of home). So I guess I qualify for that exclusive category of garage salers with manners ;-). I put on garage sales, too. Boorish people are tiring. Begonia

Early
Monday, June 07, 2010 | By bulrush

I have put on garage sales myself. And people did come early, especially when my ad was specific about valuable things being there (small appliances, baby clothes, furniture, etc). We really tried to make it organized when we opened the garage door in the morning. But if you want to look at our unorganized stuff, some of which lost their price stickers from the day before, don't whine at me because something doesn't have a sticker.

This excludes those people who actually do have manners and ask in a nice way.

Dill
Sunday, June 06, 2010 | By begonia

I have had the same experience with dill this year! I was weeding and thinning volunteer flowers in my front annual bed, which isn't very big, and ended up with enough dill weed to fill my Ronco food dryer! It was also a great spring for Parsley. I had a lot of stuff winter over that usually doesn't survive. Unfortunately, a lot of bugs survived as well. The earwigs are eating up my seedlings and potatoes at a discouraging rate. I LOVE cloth napkins
Saturday, June 05, 2010 | By grahamcl

My family used cloth napkins as I grew up, and I never thought much about how uncommon that is until last summer. In an effort to save a little where I could, I got out the napkins that have been sitting in the linen closet unused. You would have thought I had asked my husband and kids to wipe their mouths on the actual table cloth! "Won't we mess them up?" It took some coaxing, but they eventually used them (reluctantly). Once fall came around, and school started back, we gradually slipped back into paper, so now I'll have to get them back out and start all over!-grahamcl

The good news
Saturday, June 05, 2010 | By heatherie

Is that you're both okay, and I'm so glad to hear it!

That's one of the only nice things about being a renter. Yes, we do throw hundreds of dollars to someone else's equity every year, but almost every problem that comes up is someone else's problem!

Thanks!

Thanks for the vote of confidence Begonia, I need all I can get! I had set up this blog a few days ago intending to write about making adjustments in preparation for less income. I had no idea it would be NOW! My plan is to model a good attitude and flexibility......hopefully it'll catch on with the rest of the family.-grahamcl

Coming Home
Friday, June 04, 2010 | By begonia

My boys asked me to come home when they were 9 and 11 years old, respectively. They'd had it with daycare. I had also had it with working in cubicledom. Fortunately, my husband was supportive. Together, we worked out an exit strategy. I continued to work in industry long enough to pay off some bills from moving and brought business home with me, starting our present home business--but the income cut was still 40%.

We overcame much of the income cut by my homemaking, garage saling, and the decreased expenses of not having to pay for daycare, transportation, special clothing, eating out, etc. that goes along with working outside the home.

We took a hard look at our spending habits and identified our needs and wants. We kept what was most important to us and got rid of the rest. Some things we worked up to like getting rid of the second car. We agreed that "toys," lavish vacations, cars, a big house, and stuff in general was not as important as Mom, and that is the most important point you will have to reach with the man you love. If you work together for a solution, your lives will be better than ever. I certainly has been true in our home. I'm sure you can do it! Begonia
