It not only sounds like a great cake--it tastes like a great cake :-) You should try making it and inviting a bunch of friends over to help you eat it. Enjoy!

hello ohiofrannie! Try tracing paper. it will work on most everything.they even have it in white which works on dark materials and such. you can tape the corners down in case you have to stop tracing midway.good luck!

Old-Fashioned Metal Tinsel

If you still have those 800 strand pkgs. of tinsel and, it really is all "metal," I'm interested in purchasing it so I can show my g.children how we placed it on the tree decades ago.

Thrift Store Shopping
Thursday, January 20, 2011 | By begonia

We haunt the Thrift Stores at this time of year, too. We've got some really cold air coming our way as well. We are going to be looking at -17 F tonight, and my family further north is going to be getting -22 F! It's getting to be just like the "good old days." ;-)

I took my daughter shopping yesterday. She is getting a costume together for a party with her writers' group and is always on the look out for cheap additions to her wardrobe. They all are going to be a character from one of their stories. I looked through all of the book and houseware areas of each store and then would help her try on clothes. We were able to hit quite a few places in a few hours working together this way. She found two nice tops for $10 and a pair of jeans for $6 that she will use for her costume.

I didn't find much but had fun looking around. I might have bought more, but things seemed pretty expensive $3-6 for a hardcover book, and $1.39 for paperbacks and $12 for a pair of jeans at Goodwill! St. Vincents was charging more for used boxer shorts ($2.20) than you could buy them for new and a restaurant ware dessert plate was going for $1.70 each and a nice looking mug cost $3.00! Is it just me or is this a bit much?

I have noticed that any time a thrift store moves from a low rent area of town to a nicer building or location, the prices go up and stay up. I don't expect garage sale prices when I go to resale shops, although you and Pam seem to be good at finding them. What is your secret?

Company
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 | By begonia

With me it depends on the task. I had a friend who liked me to come over and keep her company when she was stripping wallpaper. She had moved into an old house, and the whole place was lousy with it! I like to have someone to talk to when I am doing a big cooking task. Failing live company, I will watch/listen to documentaries or movies. My mom used to listen to the radio. To each his or her own. ;-)

One income
Wednesday, January 19, 2011 | By pamphyila

It can be a shock going from 2 paychecks to 1 - my husband is the real moneymaker in our household- we say that he "brings home the back & I bring home the bacon bits"! That means simply that I bring home $, too - but not very much in comparison with his salary - & his job provides the health insurance. I feel I am holding up my end by being as frugal as POSSIBLE. I work at home mostly, & our 1st car is over 10 years old & w rarely use our 2nd car - which is an 80's Tbird! We live in my old rent-controlled apt. - which gives us enough money to pay for our boat slip. But that is our vacation $ - so we don't go very far! We shop in dollar stores & thrift shops almost exclusively & my husband has never been so well dressed...no, we don't have a mortgage - but we live fairly nicely on 1 1/5 incomes. luckily I am an artiste & so are my friends, so pinching pennies for luxuries is not unusual around us...If one has a lot of standing expenses, living on one income could be tricky - altho people do do it. One seems to have to develop alternate income streams - I do music & yardsaling off my colliectibles from time to time. There was an intersting note in Yahoo yesterday @ a 107 man who had never made more than $10,000 per year - & had been retired for 40+ years! I am receiving my Soc. Security early & despite my low earning power, it seems like a bit of $ - My grandmother owned her own apt. & actually SAVED on her soc. security - altho I think she went too far & deprived herself of some basic extras. (Her son-in-law bought her her lst TV.) I have no children to leave anything to - so I am just worried about supporting myself for the next 20+ years!

Harkening back to all the females washing by the rocks in the river....I like to have someone to TALK to. They don't even have to WORK. Just keep me company. This, most people just don't GET.

Thanks for the great frugal family activity!

Game nights are a great frugal activity. What a great time you must have with the grandkids! I have a lot of the games you mentioned, and my daughter and I play sometimes. My husband, unfortunately, isn't a game player, so we don't play games as a family much.

I love this too!

I love having beautiful things around me; but will only pay what I want to for them! put up with mini blinds in place where I moved to; til I found some outstandingly beautiful curtains for $4! for enough to cover 2 windows!
I am fortunate in that my neighbor now goes with me and enjoys this as well!
