family time is fun!
Saturday, January 15, 2011 | By MzScarlett

I have always enjoyed playing cards, uno, scrabble, clue, sorry, chinese checkers, regular checkers etc with the kids; even my grandkids enjoy playing poker; they know that the casino's are huge, fancy and have the "entertainers" etc, because gambling is not good; like burning money;
but we have played with pennies, beans, and advanced to poker chips! many times we have a "night" for poker; with appropriate food, like pizza, etc; and really and truly enjoy these!

Good Tips!

We have several arts communities in our area as well. In the spring and fall, there are free art tours in the town and country during which you can visit artists' studios where their collected works are displayed for the weekend. There are no refreshments, but many artiists demonstrate their techniques in various media and you can talk to them about their art.

The Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota, Libraries have free passes to various museums and zoos in the metro area if anyone reading this is from that area of the country.

New Years Cleaning
Friday, January 14, 2011 | By Jess

That is interesting that you clean better when someone is there. I tend to do more cleaning when I am alone, I don't get so distracted. Of course, if I can convince them to HELP me clean, two people can certainly knock out more mess than one.

As usual for this time of year, we have a crazy mess in the garage. We usually work on it hard twice a year. This year, I was given a bunch of shelves from Ikea that my brother was no longer using so I have great organizational plans. Someday, I hope that the garage will be cleaned up enough so that we can use it for projects and also a bonus room for the kids. We set up the old TV out there (got a flat screen and mounted it on the wall, what a space saver!) and I hope to be able to play work out tapes and active Wii games for my other task that I tackle twice a year, my weight loss goals. :)

Museums
Friday, January 14, 2011 | By Jess

Hi, sounds like a great time. I love museums myself but they sure can be expensive for the nicest ones. One thing that the Portland Art Museum does is allow free admittance on the 4th Friday of every month. Of course, it is packed but it is a great way to be able to go on the cheap. I think many museums have programs like this so it would be worth checking out.

If you live in a good sized town, lots of galleries have art walks on certain days of the month, First Tuesday or Last Thursday. Depending on the gallery, this might not be such a good place for kids but might be a nice frugal date night. There are often appetizers and even wine.

Another thing that a lot of people don't know is that libraries sometimes have passes that they can check out for zoos, museums, science centers and other attractions. Libraries are a wonderful resource for frugal folk.

We have also been cutting down on eating out. Of course, I always resolve to keep physically active & healthy, too! I think I actually lost some weight over the holidays?

Good Resolutions!
Friday, December 31, 2010 | By begonia

I'm not much of a resolution gal, but I/we have made few this year, too.

1. Sunday afternoons are family time. No working through the weekend.

2. Quit eating out and use the money to buy fresh vegetables and fruit.

3. Plan meals and food shop twice a month.

Good Luck with your resolutions Pam. Sounds like you are going to have a great year!
