Fun Reading
Wednesday, October 27, 2010 | By begonia

I agree reading as an assignment can be a chore! The nice thing about the homeschool kids is that they are in the group because they WANT to be. The discussion was great. A couple of the kids are dyslexic and listen to the books, while others listen to the books and then read them or combinations of the two. Everyone brings a couple of discussion questions and three kids volunteer to do the author bio, pub. history/creative process, and genre/historical context research to share with the group. I ride drag and read the critics and introduce a few new literary terms each meeting. Somebody always brings a snack. The Moms hang out and act as the peanut gallery from time to time. It's a party. We are reading The Land Remembers (memoir) by Ben Logan next. He's a Wisconsin writer and is still alive--the person doing the bio thought he might look him up on Facebook!

What are you reading these days Pam? I'm reading Looking for Alaska by Peter Jenkins. He also wrote A Walk Across America, which I will probably read next. When the weather turns cold, I tend to read more, too. When I find an author I like, I will read everything that they have written. I read all 21 of the Maturin/Aubrey series by Patrick O'Brian one winter! You take care!

You can buy whole cranberry sauce, too! & for a treat there are jars of lingon berries at IKEA.

The Glory of BOOKS
Tuesday, October 26, 2010 | By pamphyila

Reading shouldn't be reduced to being merely a CHORE (as I think it is sometimes in school nowadays). It is a rare PLEASURE that you can carry along with you for your whole life & open doors into wonderful & magical places!

It's a perfect day to read Frankenstein! It is overcast, in the 50Fs, and blowing and raining. I moderate our homeschool teen book discussion group and am finishing up my research for the gathering tonight. It wasn't an easy read but an excellent story for October. Lots of food for thought. What are you reading today?

sounds good!

I have always loved sharp cheese with apples but this sounds good as well! Thanks for sharing!

very interesting

I have personally never used one; my sisters do; but I use crock pots, and have a rice cooker; and use George Foreman grill; so I have never thought about getting one.
But it is interesting to think about and consider. I have thought about it for years, just never taken the plunge. May have to do it soon though.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention!

I never knew
Tuesday, October 19, 2010 | By MzScarlett

my neighbor said today as we watched the birds in the back yard for about 90 min; that I would ever be a bird watcher! I introduced her to both gardening and feeding, watering, and watching the birds!
It is so relaxing and so fun to see the various personalities of the various birds; we feed the blue jays peanuts at high points near the ends of the yard, and the little birds feed on the feeders on the tree, and on the ground, and in the big birds feeders when they are not around. They just pile into the large feeders, and I always put food in there that they will like as well!
So relaxing and enjoyable!

Hummingbirds

Thanks for the comment, Pam. I envy you folks out west. We have only one type of hummingbird, the ruby throated, but you have so many more varieties of them to enjoy. Maybe some day I'll make that trip west and see them for myself! Begonia

Birds

Your post reminded me of my mother - who watched birds out of her kitchen window. In the spring, the loquat tree outside my window is filled with fruit & attracts lovely birds, even rather large hummingbirds, & they are lovely to watch.
