A Long Time Between news...
Monday, September 20, 2010 | By Spacecadette

Well,I'm happy to report that I'm now living on my own again. I tried to get work, and did get some temp jobs, but when I lost a couple of contracts when I couldn't do the work, I ended up applying for and getting disability. I've moved back to L.A., and keeping my head above water, barely.

I'm in the process of starting a business, which I can do from my home.

Trash Picking
Friday, September 17, 2010 | By pamphyila

The secret to picking through trash is to look as respectable as possible! (Don't look homeless, look as if you don't NEED the stuff, but are just into recycling instead of tossing!) My husband and I have picked up an oil painting, furniture on trash day, various household items tossed by our neighbors, a canvas tote bag, a shirt for hubby, lawn furniture, a lamp shade, baskets, and a lot more. If you aren't sure about taking the piece, leave a note with the householder saying that you have taken it w/your phone number...Our old apt. complex was GREAT for picking, because there were a lot of people moving out at the end of the month & they just tossed stuff! (That's where I got all the furniture for the patio! ) I did also find a natural pearl necklace with golden beads on the street once! Nowadays you have to be careful about BUGS - so you might want to spray suspicious items & leave them out for a day or two before bringing them in - & as bedbugs are on the rise, I wouldn't get upholstered furniture off the street anymore!

Ultimate Find

My ultimate find was an Italian 18 carat gold serpentine necklace. I found it in the trash outside a rental property. (The owners of the stuff on the curb were long gone.) It was in a plastic drawer unit that had been on the curb for a few days. I passed it several times before I had time to stop and pick it up. I thought my daughter could use it for storing craft supplies. I went through the drawers when I got it home and among some old makeup and broken costume jewelry I found this nice gold necklace. You just never know do you?

Mugs

You really scored! Funny but I have never found a decent mug in a free box. I've found all sorts of other wonderful stuff--from vintage "Christmas" to soap, talcum powder, and new candles! It is very interesting to see what people do and do not value and also how generous they can be.

switched from homemade
Friday, September 10, 2010 | By MzScarlett

I was making my own laundry soaps, and it was great; however, suddenly chemicals were added so strongly that I could not even keep the soap inside the house.
I switched to biokleen; it has no fillers, you use very little; and I got another box when on sale; probably have enough laundry soap to last me a year! The REASON i was making my own laundry soap was not only to save $ but to keep away from all the chemicals!
